The process
At Formpress, every product we make is crafted by hand in our factory on the island of Öland, Sweden. Whether it’s trays, serving boards or trivets, each piece reflects genuine craftsmanship and attention to detail.
The craftsmanship behind our trays
Making a tray is a meticulous process that combines traditional methods with modern precision. Each tray is built from five to eight layers of thin birch veneer, a natural and environmentally friendly material known for its strength and durability. Between each veneer layer, we apply glue before pressing the bundle under high pressure and heat. This process transforms the raw materials into a durable tray designed to withstand everyday use.
Once pressed, the tray is shaped and finished. Our signature rounded edges are milled by hand, creating a smooth, comfortable grip. These edges not only enhance the design but also make the trays more resistant to impacts and better suited for industrial dishwashers — an important feature for professional environments like hotels, restaurants and cafés.
Serving boards and trivets
Our serving boards and trivets are made with a 6 mm MDF core, giving them a sturdy, flat surface perfect for serving or protecting surfaces from heat. While these products are easy to care for, they should be wiped clean with a damp cloth and not submerged in water.
The production process
We value close collaboration with our customers and believe in providing personal, attentive service throughout the entire process. When you send us your design, our experienced team guides you through each step, from digital proofing to physical samples, before we move on to production. Once the products are manufactured, they undergo strict quality control before being carefully packaged and shipped to destinations all over the world. Every year, we produce and deliver around 1,000,000 products from our factory.
